Scarlet Tie 24: Ruth>David>Jesus

David was the servant of God, a man after God’s own heart, whose descendants, God promised, would reign in Zion forever.

The Jewish prophets took this to mean that the Messiah, the man that God would raise up to deliver Israel from great tribulation on the Day of the Lord, would be a descendant of David.

Christians believe Jesus was that man.
But all these stories are recounted in the Jewish scriptures.
The “Christian” church started out as a group of Jewish people who had heard Jesus talking about his interpretation of the Law of Moses and the Prophets. That interpretation was criticised and rejected by the people who ran the church of his day.
The Jews who were influenced by the ideas of Jesus shared those ideas with people of other tribes, tongues and nations as they went about their daily lives, and those ideas proved to have a certain popularity.
Around thirty five years after the execution of Jesus (70 CE or AD if you prefer that term), the Romans put down a revolution in Jerusalem, destroyed the temple and killed a lot of Jews. Faced with the loss of their temple worship, a lot of Jewish people adopted the Law of Moses and the Prophets as a kind of cultural life line, and the synagogue movement became an even more important part of Jewish religious observance. This became even more pronounced when the Roman army did an even better job of putting down a second revolution in Jerusalem in 138 CE (Common Era, or AD if you prefer that term)
Meanwhile, the people of other tribes, tongues and nations who had been influenced by the ideas of Jesus established their own churches, and gradually gained the ascendency over Jews in these places of religious observance.

By around 300 year after the execution of Jesus, the church that purported to propagate his ideas was pretty well non-Jewish.

That multi-cultural aspect of the “Christian” church made it a very useful tool for Emperor Constantine to co-opt in his strategy to rule the very unruly Roman Empire. (Read Dan Brown’s “Da Vinci Code” to get a general idea of how this came about if you can’t be bothered reading the more academically respectable histories of the period)
The Romans were the titular rulers of the world, but they had to admit that the Greeks had provided them with the prevailing cultural and philosophical modes of interpreting the world and its inhabitants.
However the Greeks (especially those in Alexandria in Egypt) had a way of complicating matters that made it hard to run any sort of unified, catholic church.

Take the question, “Was Jesus a god or a man”.
The Romans could dispense with such troubling ideas by inventing a form of words about “God incarnate in human flesh”, proclaiming them to be church ‘doctrine’ and then killing anyone who wanted to dispute their form of words.
In the meantime, people could be justified in asking what the ideas of intellectuals in Constantinople, Rome and Alexandria had to do with the scriptures that had been originally compiled in Jerusalem.
The culmination of the dominance of Alexandria, Constantinople and later Rome was the pronouncement that the people of Israel were no longer God’s chosen people. In fact as the people who had arranged the death of Jesus, they were unworthy, and could be persecuted along with the heretics who made trouble for the bureaucrats who ran the church.
So the church purporting to be the sole representative of Jesus and God on earth, transformed the people of Israel whom God had promised Abraham would be his representatives on earth into accursed and evil servants of Satan

When Jesus had been asked where God should be worshipped, he refused to nominate a geographic (cultural) location. Instead, he said God was a spirit, and so should be worshipped in spirit and in truth. (John 4:19-24," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
The book of Revelation depicts Jesus in heaven, praising God with people of all tribes, tongues and nations. These people have been redeemed by his blood, and been purified by passing through great tribulations (atonement). Later there is a special celebration when the physical descendants of Abraham who have also been redeemed and have also passed through great tribulation (atonement) make their presence felt in heaven.

Says Rahab’s son to Moabite, awakened from a dream
“Another has the kinsman’s right tis he who must redeem
But should he not redeem your life then you shall be my spouse

And you shall be the mother of a righteous royal house
And though that house in time may fall, its stump shall still take root
And from that stump shall come a branch that bears most righteous fruit
Not in Athens, Alexandria, Jerusalem or Rome
Not in London or Vienna, neath some cathedral dome
But in spirit and truth, and the hearts that bear the fruit
The essence of those righteous minds
The scarlet tie that binds

Says the angel to the heavenly throng, assembled round the throne
Who is worthy to unseal the course of history, yet unknown
Put to flight all Satan’s hordes in Zion’s troubled hour
And reign in wisdom, might and glory,
honour, wealth and power.

Not in Athens, Alexandria, Vienna or Rome,
But on Zion’s holy mountain, on David’s righteous
In spirit and truth, and the hearts that bear the fruit
The essence of those righteous minds
