Dragon 7.1: Revelation Recapitulated

It is possible that this dragon represents a subversion of some of the old pagan creation myths to make a point about monotheism.

If you wish to talk to people about a new idea, an idea that there is only one God, it is sensible to start from what they know and believe then argue from that point to the point you wish to make.
So, in arguing for the idea of a single God, the Hebrew writers may have started out from the polytheist (many gods) myths of their neighbours.
In those old myths, the gods fought amongst each other. The victor and his allies reigned in some exalted place. The losers were despatched to the underworld, or spread across the night sky as stars.
The bible writers are not very rigorous in the way in which they go about subverting theses myths to make their point.
Lucifer, the once shining but now fallen angel of Isaiah chapter 13 may be a reference to Satan.
Perhaps the King of Tyre blazing in glory in his Garden of Eden in Ezekiel chapter 28 may portray the story of the serpent whose pride beguiles Adam and Eve into resorting to magic rather than adapting to a world that was ruled by the often unpredictable laws of nature and the ability of people to exercise their free will to do anything they wish to do (good or bad).

It is possible that these passages suggest that the mythical loser gods have been recycled by the bible writers to represent the harbingers of evil.

In the form of a serpent, they tempt Adam and Eve to avoid the process of lifelong atonement by using the power of magic to make the world and the people in it do exactly as they want them to.

In other words, to seek redemption in magical transformations of the human and physical environment, rather than patiently adapting themselves to, and dealing with, the problems thrown up by the laws of nature and the exercise of free will by other humans for malevolent, rather than beneficial behaviour.
The Dragon (the chief of the mythical loser gods) endeavours to corrupt all mankind and makes war on those who refuse to resort to magic - those who accept the refining nature of the atonement process - those who side with God’s messiah.

Revelation 12 tells how God protected the infant messiah against the evil perpetrated upon him by the dragon.
The infant child, he safe refuge found, for half of seven years
Transported there on eagle’s wings, while Satan crouched in fear
His span cut short, his reign curtailed by him he would destroy
Spewed forth a mighty torrent there to sweep away that boy
The dragon became very unhappy and took his revenge on any person who had sided with God’s messiah.
The earth it swallowed up that flood, restored that desert place
The dragon, now the more enraged, sought to destroy that race
That race of men who virtue seek in grace and righteous fear
Seek out the truth, all error spurn, and to their God, draw near
Revelation 12:10-12 introduces a constant, but little acknowledged theme that appears throughout the bible.
The battle against evil has already been fought, and won by the forces of grace and truth, mercy and the Law, redemption and atonement.

The power of evil is really just an illusion.
It’s the typical Hollywood movie ending. The good guys prevail over the forces of evil. They already have. It’s just that the forces of evil, being inspired by the Father of Lies, are very adept at misrepresenting the truth of the matter.
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.
For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.
They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony;
However it not quite the typical Hollywood movie ending. The good guys might not get to live the rest of their lives in connubial bliss with their love of their life. They might not even get to ride off, triumphant into the sunset.
The depressing plot resolution might involve them giving up their mortal lives.
... they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them!
The good guys who get to keep their lives are not that much better off, in purely human terms. They will be subject to the refining fires of atonement

But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you!    He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."
...Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring—those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven’s vaulted hall
A twelve crowned woman clothed in sun, the moon within her thall
Cried out in pain, and laboured long, a son-child she did bear
The dragon, crouching at her feet, that child to rend and tear

The dragon flicked his tail and swept one third of all the stars
From lofty vault to abyss deep, to weep and tend their scars
These fallen angels there did watch their dragon master’s plight
As earthwards he ejected too, no match for Michal’s might

The infant child, he safe refuge found, for half of seven years
Transported there on eagle’s wings, while Satan crouched in fear
His span cut short, his reign curtailed by him he would destroy
Spewed forth a mighty torrent there to sweep away that boy

The earth it swallowed up that flood, restored that desert place

The dragon, now the more enraged, sought to destroy that race
That race of men who virtue seek in grace and righteous fear
Seek out the truth, all error spurn, and to their God, draw near
